Frequently Asked Questions

About White Systems

What does White Systems make?

White Systems designs and manufactures automated storage systems including Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs), Vertical Carousels, Horizontal Carousels, and inventory management software. Our solutions improve accuracy, speed, and space utilization in industrial and healthcare environments.

What industries does White Systems serve?

We support manufacturing, MRO, aerospace and defense, distribution, automotive, healthcare, and pharmacy operations. Our systems handle tools, parts, components, and regulated materials that require secure, efficient storage.

What makes White Systems different from other VLM providers?

White Systems provides U.S.-based service, modular automated storage systems, and over 75 years of industry experience. Our VLMs use a 4-point metal rack-and-pinion drive for stability and precision, offer ergonomic tray delivery as standard, and include an optional dual-tray elevator for higher throughput. These engineering advantages, combined with reliable domestic support, make us a strong long-term partner.

Where is White Systems located?

White Systems is headquartered in Hyannis, Massachusetts, and supports customers nationwide with U.S.-based engineering, manufacturing, and service teams.

Does White Systems manufacture all its equipment in the United States?

White Systems manufactures its PC3 systems, vertical carousels, and horizontal carousels in the United States and supports them with U.S.-based engineering and service teams. Our Vertical Lift Modules (VLMs) are currently manufactured in Sweden and supported in the U.S., with plans to manufacture VLMs in our U.S. facility in the future.

Automated Storage Systems & Products

What is a Vertical Lift Module (VLM)?

A VLM is an automated storage system that uses a vertical tower and an extractor to deliver trays directly to an operator. It saves floor space, improves organization, and increases picking accuracy.

What is a Vertical Carousel?

A vertical carousel rotates shelves along a track and brings stored items to an ergonomic access point. It’s ideal for high-density storage of small parts, tools, and medical supplies.

What is a Horizontal Carousel?

A horizontal carousel uses bins that rotate horizontally to deliver items to the operator. It’s commonly used for high-throughput, high-picking environments that require fast order fulfillment.

What type of items can be stored in your VLMs or carousels?

Tools, parts, electronic components, fasteners, maintenance supplies, medical devices, pharmacy inventory, kits, and sensitive or regulated materials.

Do you offer modular engineered solutions?

Yes. Our systems are built on a modular design that allows you to choose the height, tray configurations, access points, controls, and features that fit your operation. Modularity gives you flexibility without requiring custom engineering, and it lets your system scale as your needs change.

Automated Storage Systems & Products

What problems do automated storage systems solve?

Automated storage systems reduce walking and searching, free up floor space, improve accuracy, increase picking speed, secure inventory, and minimize ergonomic strain on operators.

How much space can a VLM or carousel save?

Most installations recover up to 70–85% of floor space by consolidating inventory vertically and eliminating wide aisle shelving.

What are the safety and ergonomics benefits?

Our systems deliver items at an ergonomic height, reduce lifting and walking, and include safety light curtains, interlocks, and controlled access to protect operators and inventory.

Does White Systems offer solutions for high-security or regulated environments?

Yes. White Systems supports high-security and regulated environments including clean rooms, hospital pharmacies, aerospace and defense facilities, and medical device operations. Our vertical carousels are commonly used in clean-room pharmacy settings, and we offer refrigerated vertical carousels for temperature-controlled storage needs.

Software & Integration

What software works with your automated storage systems?

Our control software manages inventory, storage locations, user access, reporting, and workflow. It supports lot, batch, and expiration tracking and can run on-premise in secure environments.

Can your systems integrate with WMS, ERP, or other platforms?

Yes. We integrate with leading WMS, ERP, and MES systems through standard APIs, middleware, and custom connectors when required.

Installation, Service & Support

Does White Systems provide nationwide installation and service?

We support manufacturing, MRO, aerospace and defense, distribution, automotive, healthcare, and pharmacy operations. Our systems handle tools, parts, components, and regulated materials that require secure, efficient storage.

How long does installation take?

We support manufacturing, MRO, aerospace and defense, distribution, automotive, healthcare, and pharmacy operations. Our systems handle tools, parts, components, and regulated materials that require secure, efficient storage.

What are the maintenance requirements for automated storage systems?

Preventative maintenance typically includes inspections, lubrication, calibration, and software checks. Most customers schedule 1–2 visits per year under a service plan.

What service plans do you offer?

We offer tiered service plans that include preventative maintenance, prioritized scheduling, discounted labor, and direct support from our U.S.-based Field Service Engineers.

How long does installation take?

Most VLM and carousel installations take 1–3 days depending on the machine size, facility layout, and integration needs.

How quickly can a field service engineer respond?

Response time depends on location, but contract customers receive priority and direct scheduling with a Field Service Engineer assigned to their region.

Do you repair or service other brands of VLMs or carousels?

No. We service only White Systems equipment to ensure safety, reliability, and compliance.

Pricing, ROI & Getting Started

What factors affect the cost of a VLM or carousel?

Height, tray count, weight capacity, software requirements, integrations, safety features, and customization options all influence final pricing.

What ROI can customers expect?

Customers typically see ROI through space recovery, faster picking, reduced searching, improved accuracy, and better inventory control. Many operations recover costs within 12–24 months.

How do I request a consultation or facility assessment?

You can request a consultation through our website, and our team will review your space, inventory, and workflows to recommend the right automated storage solution.
