Single-Tray vs. Dual-Tray VLMs: Is the Faster Elevator Worth It?
When selecting a vertical lift module, buyers naturally compare height, tray size, load capacity and storage volume.
But one less visible specification can make a noticeable difference during daily picking:
Can the elevator carry one tray or two?
A single-tray elevator handles one tray at a time. A dual-tray elevator can carry two trays, allowing it to retrieve the next requested tray while the operator is still picking from the current one.
That sounds like an easy reason to choose dual-tray technology. But faster tray delivery only adds value when the machine—not the operator—is slowing down the process.
The important distinction is that dual-tray does not mean the operator works from two trays simultaneously.
In the Compact Twin, one tray is presented at the access opening while the elevator retrieves the next requested tray. Depending on the sequence, that next tray may already be waiting on the elevator behind the access opening when the current pick is completed.
The operator sees one tray. The machine is managing two.
When a Single-Tray VLM Is Enough
Not every operation needs the fastest possible tray transition.
Imagine a maintenance technician retrieving a replacement part. The technician may need to verify the part number, update a work order, count the remaining stock or gather several items from the same tray.
In that workflow, the operator spends more time working from the tray than waiting for the machine.
A single-tray VLM can still provide the benefits that drive most projects:

- Less walking through shelving
- Better organization and inventory control
- More usable floor space

A dual-tray elevator becomes more valuable when operators complete picks quickly and regularly need another tray.
While one tray is presented, the elevator can retrieve the next request using its second tray position. When the sequence allows, that tray can be pre-staged behind the access opening and presented as soon as the current pick is complete.
The wait is not eliminated in every cycle. Tray location, machine travel and operator speed still affect timing.
But the next retrieval can begin sooner.
That is the advantage of the Compact Twin.
The Compact Twin combines a true dual-tray elevator with dual delivery for applications where tray presentation speed matters. It is designed for faster-paced workflows such as:

The best case for a Compact Twin is not simply that an operation has “a lot of inventory.” It is that frequent tray changes are limiting how quickly work can be completed.

A facility that picks several items from each tray may not need rapid tray changes. Another facility may pick only one component before immediately requesting the next tray.
Those two operations could store similar inventory but require very different machines.
Peak demand matters too. One hundred requests spread throughout a shift are different from one hundred requests that must be completed during a short production window.
That is why a VLM should be selected around the actual workflow—not one specification in isolation.
